ROUBINA KHODADIN
Dance artist and choreographer
Born in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Roubina does not have a background common to most dancers. She has neither taken dance classes from an early age nor has she 'trained' as a dancer before starting to choreograph her own work. Indeed she worked for modern dance choreographer Virginia Farman in Brighton, and performed her own work in a number of outdoor spaces in London, before undertaking formal training.
Staring off as an improviser, Roubina made up her own training package by going to classes at the Laban Centre, Tower Hamlets College in London, Georges Momboye Centre in Paris and by researching into traditional dance forms in Africa and India. She has worked with traditional African dance and music troupe Frititi as well as with contemporary African companies. She has kept fuelling her own training through acquiring other skills: contact improvisation, buto, pilates and even poetry.
VOOA founded by Roubina was one of London's pioneering dance companies having brought dance to non-theatre venues. The other specificity of the company was (and still is) the desire to focus on the content of the pieces, not just their aesthetic aspect. Roubina's first piece 'Pursuit' toured commercial centres, outdoor spaces as well as a number of festivals: Corsham, Liverpool and Canterbury. One of the key achievements of the company was the support from the London Borough of Southwark for the creation of a major outdoor piece bringing together artists from various backgrounds as well as young people in a site-specific performance 'Choices' on Peckham Town Square. |

Based in Nîmes since 2004, Roubina's has developed a very personal contemporary vocabulary which is however in constant evolution. Her pieces are preceded by research, influenced by diverse cultural influences and nourished by the integration of other artisitic forms (live music, poetry, visual arts..). She has, to date, created 6 pieces, 4 of which are still touring.
Teaching
Due to her unique dance background, Roubina has taught from an early stage of her career, improvisation and choreography to dancers, professional and non-professional alike. She also leads workshops in african based dance, 'movement and voice' for adults as well as 'dance and music' for 4-7 year olds.
Artistic director of VOOA
Even before becoming a professional dancer and choreographer, Roubina believed that the arts could be powerful in promoting personal development and tackling social issues. As the artistic director of Voice of Art, based in London, she initiated a number of artisic projects which aimed at bringing the arts into local communities. One of the key projects, 'Breaking Free' (professional dance piece + outreach project) aimed at the prevention of teenage pregnancy. The project reached local youth groups and colleges in Southwark.
As the artistic director of VOOA in Nîmes, she fights for bringing the arts in people's lives in view of promoting a healthier life style and fostering critical thinking in an age where we are overwhelmed by stereotypical images and ready-made ideas.
